A Breathtaking Sunrise at Alexander Point in Matheran

Waking up early in hill stations has its own charm. On my recent trip to Matheran, one of the things that truly took my breath away was watching the orange orb rising from the quiet hilltop, and Alexander point turned out to be the perfect spot to catch the first ray of sunlight over the misty valley.

Things to do at Alexander Point

  • Panoramic Views: offers stunning views of Palasdari Lake, Garbett Point, Chowk Point, Rambaug Point, and the winding Ulhas River.
  • Thrilling Adventure: A 1300-feet zipline from Alexander Point - Rambaug Point during peak season, trekking and horse riding until a certain point.
  • Photography: Great place to capture Sunrise/Sunset views, deep valleys and picturesque scenery.
  • Peaceful Moments: Perfect place to relax and soak in the beauty of nature.

Witnessing the First Light

Matheran is a vehicle-free zone, which means relying on the feet to reach the spot. With excitement in my heart and  camera in hand, I set out while the town was still asleep. I was greeted with the cool-crisp morning air, mixed with the earthy scent of the forest, making the entire journey an memorable experience.

Alexander Point is a very quiet place with hardly any crowd, especially during sunrise. I spotted a quiet place and watched as the sky shifted into different hues of colour. Within a few moments, the entire landscape transformed before my eyes,  from deep purple to soft pink, and then to shades of golden orange. From here, you can get the panoramic views of  Palasdari Lake, Rambaug Point, Garbett Point. and the winding Ulhas river.

How to Reach Alexander Point

From the main market area Alexander Point is about 1.5 km away (20 minutes). The trail is  narrow, lined with tall trees, fresh morning breeze and chirping of birds but easily doable. Horses/ponies are available for a more relaxed journey until a certain point and thereafter need to go by foot.

💡Hire the guide or travel in group.  Do not explore the viewpoints

Best Time to Visit Alexander Point

Matheran has a pleasant climate and can be visited all year-round. I would highly recommend visiting in the early morning or late evening for the best view and experience.

October - June: Cool temperature, clear sky perfect for sightseeing and relaxation.

June - September: The valley turns lush green with waterfalls and misty clouds.
